CRITICAL CONSUMPTION. A SOLIDARITY BASED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PURCHASERS AND PRODUCERS

A meeting was promoted during the Social Cohesion Days with the authors of the book titled “Il Consumo Critico” in order to think about the concepts of economy and solidarity and to encourage good practices.

On 10th June 2017 a meeting was held in Piazza Casotti, Reggio Emilia, with Francesca Forno and Paolo R. Graziano, authors of the book “Il consumo critico” (lit. Critical Consumption) (Il Mulino, 2016) which gave the opportunity to explore the concept of “critical citizen” and the new models of living and solidarity, both inside and outside the labour market.

This event, which was promoted by the Social Cohesion Days and “QUA – Il Quartiere Bene Comune”, in collaboration with the social cooperative Coopselios and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, gathered representatives from the academic world, public administrations and citizens who started a meditation on the individual, society and the ability to determine the value of a product in terms of its environmental sustainability, social impact and forms of participation.

What is critical consumption? What are the implications of thinking about the economy as an instrument of progress and human development? How should a “critical citizen” behave if s/he is aware of the impact of his/her own purchasing choices? Fair trade economy networks are real social revolutions which affect our living standards and transform decision-making processes as they introduce new variables such as producers’ behaviour and social and environmental sustainability in the production chain.

These were the subjects on which the attendees meditated under the guidance of moderator Marta Mainieri, an expert in collaborative economics and founder of the platform Collaboriamo.org, during an event that had a cross-sectoral approach and promoted good practices, fully in line with the objectives of promoting the values of the modern welfare systems pursued by the Social Cohesion Days.
